Dopo esser sopravvissuto allo tsunami che qualche hanno prima ha colpito la zona in cui vive, il geologo Kristian Eikfjord si è separato dalla moglie. Mentre lui vive ancora a Geiranger e fa i conti con i danni che l'evento ha lasciato nella sua psiche, la moglie e i figli si sono trasferiti a Oslo per tentare un nuovo inizio. Dopo la strana morte di un ex collega mentre lavora in un tunnel, Kristian scopre che la città sarà presto l'epicentro di un terremoto ancora più violento di quello che la colpì nel 1904.

La Casa de Papel directly translates from Spanish to English as "The House of Paper". This title is a reference to the Royal Mint of Spain, the target of the first two heists in the series, where the paper for printing money is produced. The show's English title, Money Heist, was chosen by Netflix to avoid confusion with the American show House of Cards.
